Yep, you can send short message service text messages to a GSM phone for nix.  This site allows you to store phone numbers, so you can recall them by name, compose a message and send it to a phone anywhere.  The site is, I guess, intentionally frustrating to use, to discourage commercial exploitation.  For example, not every message you 'send' gets sent (at least it tells you which ones haven't gone).  So it pays to copy any message before you send it, so you can paste it in again if you need to retry.  Have fun!
